Cutlery designed by Arne Jacobsen
Remember Dave and Frank eating while keeping an eye on the flat-screen television sets broadcasting their interview? Well, you may still have to wait a while for synthetic TV dinners and television "pads", but at least you can eat with the same cutlery. Designed by famed architect Arne Jacobsen as long ago as 1957 (well within Stanley Kubrick's time-frame), it can still be purchased from high-class merchandisers of such things. The description below is taken from an information leaflet published by its makers, Georg Jensen, and sent to me by Thomas Hauerslev - thank you! |

Designed in 1957 by architect Arne Jacobsen...a vision into the future, so pioneering that it was used in the film "2001: A Space Odyssey". Form and function are boldly thought out down to the tiniest detail, making an overall impression of natural elegance... Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971) was one of the century's leading Scandinavian architects. A perfectionist with an overall architectural vision. He realized his ideas and intentions not only in many great buildings, but also in the items used in them: furniture, textiles, fixtures and fittings and cutlery. Produced in stainless steel in both a matte and a mirror finish. |

Sudden thought: who did the washing up on board the Discovery? This cutlery is hardly disposable...is that what all those lockers were for in the Discovery's long middle section? Dave and Frank used the spacepods to go out every now and then and stash their dirty crockery? |
